Years ago I marked out an intinerary for myself; but the trip never materialized. Then she had a baby and became as old as any really grown-up person, or older, and very dull. She hated to leave; for this hour would be the most interesting. Here was a poor half-naked creature, with a straw crown on his head, and a wooden sceptre in his hand, seated on the ground with all the dignity of a monarch on his throne. He was always word-building, a metaphorist, lavish with singing adjectives; but often he built in confusion because it was difficult to describe something beautiful in a new yet simple way.
